Busy Week

Brooke and Fanny had a busy week.   Wednesday was the Red Feather Game where the Medway football team took on South and students who bought a ticket were able to get out of class for the morning.  On the morning of the game, Fanny commented to Brooke, " I know nothing about Canadian football" to which Brooke replied, " don't worry no one else gets it either".   lol    The girls had fun cheering on Medway although they lost 41-8.    Thursday as part of Fanny's drama class she went to London to the Grand Theatre to watch the high school production of The Addams Family.  Fanny loved the play!!

Friday was a day off for students so the girls enjoyed sleeping in.  They needed the sleep so they could rest up for the night.  During the day the girls went over to Amy Zavitz's house so that the girls could hang out and so that Fanny could play their piano.   It was officially the weekend and the girls were exited for the annual Ilderton Fall Fair.   Brooke and Fanny met up with Julia Hisey and the three of them went to the fair to enjoy the midway which they did until about 11pm.  The girls then were up Saturday morning for the parade and then went back to the fair for day 2.   A few more rides and some yummy fair food and the girls were home and ready for Saturday night.

Saturday night was the night for London Lightning Fastball's 1st Annual Spikes Volleyball Fundraiser.  Brooke, Fanny, Zack, Matt, Mikayla and Macenna made up the team Cools And The Gang.   They didn't win the tournament but they had a lot of fun and helped the association raise some much needed money.

Sunday and the girls along with myself were back at the fair.   We bought some apples, took a few photos and had an interesting conversation with an older gentleman who gave us each a walking stick after he shared his religious beliefs.    We also walked through some trailers and Fanny was amazed at the size of them and how cheap they were.  She even picked up some brochures to take home to her mom and dad.   Steak, baked potatoes, fresh bread and caesar salad for dinner.

Happy 18th Anniversary to my wife Lydia!!

Cedar Point - Best Amusement Park in the World

Saturday September 20th we were up shortly after 4am in preparation for our next great adventure with Fanny, a trip to Cedar Point.  Some fun facts about Cedar Point;

• 2014 will be Cedar Point’s 145th season of operation, making it the second oldest continually-operated amusement park in North America
• Cedar Point has been voted the “Best Amusement Park in the World” for 16 consecutive years by the readers of Amusement Today
• Cedar Point features more than 150 rides, shows and attractions
• The Cedar Point Peninsula is 364 acres
• Cedar Point boasts 72 rides, including 17 roller coasters making it the "Roller Coaster Capital of the World"

So after a short 50 minute drive to Port Huron, Michigan we arrived in the U.S. at 6AM and promptly were asked to go into the boarder office so that Fanny could fill in some paper work.  We were greeted by surprisingly a very friendly U.S. boarder officer who asked Fanny some questions, finger printer her and within 20 minutes we were back on the road on to Ohio.  Total trip time was about 4 hours from our house.  We arrived and as we got closer we heard Fanny say, "oh my god".  Cedar Point was an amazing site.
We checked into our hotel, Breakers located onsite and headed for the 10AM early opening for park guests.   The gates opened and we were off, first ride the Millennium Force.  Total ride time, 2 minutes with a top speed of 150 kms.  If we weren't awake before the ride we certainly were after.  Next up Iron Dragon which was fun but compared to our first ride, was a kids ride.  It was now getting close to 11AM the time when the park officially opened and when the Top Thrill Dragster ride opened.  We got in line and nervously waited  30 minutes.

It was our turn and we got strapped in, ready to go 193 km/hour in 3.8 seconds.  Lydia could be heard saying , " oh shit",  Fanny saying " oh god", Steve saying "^%$#@!!$$%^" and Brooke telling her father to watch his language.  Just then the dragster lights went from yellow to green and we were off!!!  Up the 90 degrees to the top (128metres) before hurtling down to the bottom.  Total ride time about 20 seconds.   We SURVIVED!!

The rest of the day Fanny and Lydia went on numerous other rides while Brooke and I opted to take it easy.  We went for dinner and then came back into the park around 7pm for additional rides and to check out a  Halloween haunted house and other haunted attractions in the rain.  Poor Lydia and Fanny waited over 45 minutes for a ride only to be told it would be closing due to the rain.

After a great nights sleep we were up and heading home.  We did some shopping in Port Huron before waiting 1 hour to cross the border into Canada.   Another great adventure complete.  Up next the Ilderton Fair.

London Lightning Fastball

Tuesday September 16th was the second of three nights of tryouts for London Lightning Fastball.  2015 will mark the 5th year of competitive ball for Brooke so it was a lot of fun for Brooke to share her passion with Fanny.   Fanny participated in all the drills and always did it with her signature smile.

Terry Fox

The annual Terry Fox Run took place in communities all across Canada on Sunday September 14th.   Fanny had seen a statue of Terry Fox in Ottawa and had seen the signs around town promoting the event so when she asked if we could participate we jumped at the chance.

Terry Fox (July 28, 1958 – June 28, 1981) was a Canadian athlete, humanitarian, and cancer research activist. In 1980, with one leg having been amputated, he embarked on a cross-Canada run to raise money and awareness for cancer research. Although the spread of his cancer eventually forced him to end his quest after 143 days and 5,373 kilometres (3,339 mi), and ultimately cost him his life, his efforts resulted in a lasting, worldwide legacy. The annual Terry Fox Run, first held in 1981, has grown to involve millions of participants in over 60 countries and is now the world's largest one-day fundraiser for cancer research; over C$600 million has been raised in his name.[1]

We woke up early and with the girls still wiping sleep out of their eyes we were at the starting line, listening to some stories about Terry and doing some warm up exercises before starting our runs.
Lydia, Brooke and Fanny ran the 2.5km route while I chose to run the 10kms.   It was exciting that Fanny could learn about one of Canada's greatest heroes and that we could help in some small way to raise money for cancer research.

We finished the day by getting together with Lydia's family for a dinner at the Mandarin,  an all you can eat buffet restaurant. At the restaurant Fanny enjoyed her first Chinese fortune cookie and also loved that our waitress gave each of us a hot towel before and after dinner to clean our hands with.  Pictured are Lee-Anne, Brooke, Fanny, Zack, Egon Sr.(busy paying), Christien and Egon jr's fingers.

School

School has been going well for Fanny and she seems to be enjoying her classes which are MTV (a broadcasting course), science, Canadian history and drama.  Just yesterday Lydia and I were excited to hear that she had achieved 100% on a Canadian history test.   After quizzing her on who the first Prime Minister of Canada was and Fanny correctly telling me, "it was MacDonald, just like the restaurant" I said that she could stay.  Brooke has been helping Fanny with science which they take together and any other courses she may have questions on and in turn Fanny has been a great help for Brooke when it comes to French.   Fanny still laughs at Brooke's Canadian accent when speaking French but Fanny has been a great help in getting Brooke ready for her 3 months in France and quizzing her for tests.

The MTV course (Medway TV) started off slow but Fanny has been having fun the last week taking various pictures for the program.

Cody Simpson

Saturday September 13th and Brooke and Fanny went into London to the Western Fair.  The annual fall fair was first held back in 1868 and still to this day continues to be popular.   The 10 day fair this year experienced some terrible weather so much so that the midway had to be closed twice.   Saturday night although cool there was no rain and the girls (especially Fanny) were ready to attend the Cody Simpson concert.

Fanny and Brooke enjoyed the show and Cody can sleep better knowing that he gained at least one new fan.

Fanny the Cook

When Fanny first arrived now almost 4 weeks ago, she had informed us that she wasn't much of a cook.  Well she certainly has proved otherwise since her arrival.  In the short time she's been with us she's helped make muffins, pancakes, cookies,an apple/peach crisp (pictured below) crepes and even a quiche.   We can't wait to see what she'll bake next.

Shopping Marathon

After a short but busy week at school for Brooke and Fanny and the girls desperate to sleep in, we were on the highway at 7am  on our way to the Ripley's Aquarium and to do a lot of shopping. Help!!  Surprisingly traffic was good and we were in downtown Toronto by 9:15.   After a short walk down by the waterfront to see Lake Ontario, we walked the 2 blocks to the Aquarium which is right beside both the CN Tower and the Rogers Centre, the home of the Toronto Blue Jays.

The girls had a great time in the aquarium but once done it was time for SHOPPING!   We knew it was going to be a long day so we opted to jump in a cab and take the short $10 ride to the Eaton Centre.  The Eaton Centre is the largest shopping mall in Toronto with its 230 stores and restaurants.  Once we arrived the girls ate and then they were gone.  They disappeared into the group of shoppers not to be seen again for 3 hours.

One more stop before home.  We stopped at the Premium Outlet Mall in Halton Hills where Fanny looked at Levi's 511 jeans for her brother but wasn't exactly sure on the length so she opted to get them another shopping day.  After 2 more hours of shopping we arrived home 12 hours after we had left.   Sleeping in is going to feel so good tomorrow.

First Day of School

Brooke and Fanny both woke up tired on Tuesday September 2nd for the 1st day of school.   Brooke got up and asked me if she could watch TV at 11:30 Monday night and she was still watching it when I went to bed at midnight.   Fanny although she didn't get up said that she had been awake several times throughout the night.  Aah to be a teenager again.  So with Lydia waking them both up at 6am they had no choice but to get their tired selves out of bed, have breakfast and begin the hour long process to get themselves "school ready".   I asked them if I could take their picture and it was only agreed to if I promised not to put the photo on Facebook.  The blog I was told was okay because as Brooke had said, "no one reads it anyway".   After taking several photos it was time for one more "have fun at school" from Lydia and myself and then the girls exited the front door to walk to the bus stop to catch the bus for 7:30am.

Lydia left shortly after and I waited until I received a text from Brooke telling me that they both had  got on the bus with no issues.   We got home and were excited to hear about Brooke's first day of grade 10 and Fanny's first day at her Canadian High School.  Both equally important.    Without going into a lot of detail (another promise I had to make to Brooke and Fanny) the girls had a great first day!!   Both Fanny and Brooke like their teachers and all the students were nice and welcoming to Fanny.   The girls were exhausted so after doing their 10 minutes of homework they watched a movie had dinner and both were in bed by 8:30.   I'm told being a teenager can be exhausting!!!

Home Sweet Home

We arrived home just after 9pm.  Both Fanny and Brooke had showers, we ate pizza and were all in bed by 11:30.   The Labour Day 3 day weekend  was filled with the following activities;

  • Brooke teaching Fanny the fundamentals of fastball (tryouts are Tuesday September 2nd)
  • Fanny meeting my parents, Russell and Shirley and my Aunt Violet and Uncle Reuben from British Columbia
  • Fanny meeting Brooke's ball coach, Tim along with his wife Bonnie and their daughter Kaitlyn
  • Eating bbq ribs
  • Meeting our good friends Marcie and Tracy Zavitz and being able to hang out with their daughter Amy again.
  • Visiting Stratford, Ontario the birthplace of Justin Bieber.  The town is also known for being the home for the Stratford Shakespeare Festival
  • Fanny discovering Kiwi Kraze (self serve frozen yogurt shop) Kiwi Kraze
  • The girls picking out their 1st day of school clothes and getting their school supplies ready.
Tomorrow is a big day for Fanny as it's the first day of school.  Lydia and I know that she'll fit in well at her new school and will enjoy the experience.  The girls will be waking up at 6am to get ready for the day before catching the bus at 7:30.   We can't wait to hear all about Fanny and Brooke's exciting 1st day of Grade 10.

Road Trip

Sorry for the delay in posting to my blog but since Fanny arrived on August 22nd we've been busy having fun in such places as Ottawa, Montreal and Quebec City.   Before we left for our trip Monday August 25th we had an appointment at Medway High School which will be Fanny's school for the next 2.5 months.    We met with the head of the guidance department who helped Fanny select her courses.  Fanny will be taking a 1) TV broadcasting course 2) Science (which she'll take with Brooke) 3) Canadian History and finally 4) Drama.  All great courses and certainly ones that will allow her to improve on her already exceptional English skills as well as interact with her fellow students.

After Brooke gave Fanny a tour of her new school we were on the road for our 6 hour drive to our Nations Capital, Ottawa.

Ottawa:
We arrived to our hotel at around 6pm, checked in and headed directly to By Ward Market, only about 2 blocks away.  We found a restaurant that we had visited before and had a great table overlooking the market. During dinner Fanny learned a new phrase that made her laugh, " right on".  That phrase was heard more than a few occasions during the week.    After dinner we headed for the Canadian Parliament buildings to watch Mosaika which was billed as a sound and light show on Canada's history all projected on the parliament buildings.

After the 30 minute show we walked back past the Rideau Canal and it's locks, past the historic Chateau Laurier hotel and back to the By Ward Market so that Fanny could try her first Beaver Tail.   A Beaver Tail is a pastry stretched by hand to resemble the tail of a beaver.  They are then float cooked in oil  and served hot and topped with such things as sugar, cinnamon and fruit.
The next morning we woke to beautiful sunshine.   Little did we know it would be 35 Celsius with the humidity.  We walked several blocks down Sussex drive past the U.S. embassy and to the Royal Canadian Mint.  There we took a 45 minute tour and learned all about the process of making specialized limited edition coins as well as the 2010 Olympic medals.  The Canadian currency we learned is processed in Winnipeg and that Ottawa produces all the specialized gold and silver coins.  We saw a roll of gold worth between $18 - $20 million dollars and Brooke and Fanny at the end of the tour were able to hold onto a 12.7 kg gold bar valued at $540,000.
We finished in Ottawa with a quick walk down by the Rideau Canal and the girls took a water taxi over to Gatineau Quebec.   One final picture in front of the Canadian Parliament buildings and we were back in the car for our next adventure to Montreal, Quebec.
Montreal:
Knowing that we were now only a short 2 hour drive away from Montreal was nice.   We were just in Montreal last year when Brooke and her ball team were at the Canadian Championships where they won silver so going back to this great city was awesome!    Let me say that driving in Montreal can be a bit of a challenge and it was for us also with construction taking place on what seemed like every street.   After passing our hotel once we circled around and checked in for our two night stay.  The hotel was right beside China town and only a short 3 blocks away from old Montreal.   We headed right for China town which consisted of 2 or 3 blocks of Asian restaurants and shops where all* tried Dragon Bearded candy.   It's sugar spun floss-like coating covering coconut and peanuts.  We all laughed as I tried it first followed by Fanny, Lydia and Brooke.   *All represents Lydia, Fanny and myself and Brooke too if you include her touching it with her tongue.

After our adventure in China Town we walked over to old Montreal.  It's the oldest area in the city with some of the buildings dating to the 17th century.  A beautiful part of the city that help to make it such a Canadian treasure.   Brooke quickly found what she was looking for, Montreal Poutine.   Fanny and Brooke ordered poutine (french fries, gravy and cheese curds) while Lydia and I had a Montreal smoked meat sandwich.  I must give Fanny credit, up to this point she has not been afraid to try any food and so far has loved it all.

After some more walking in old Montreal we went back to the hotel to rest up for our busy day that Lydia had planned for us.  Wednesday was another beautiful day, we awoke to sunshine which was perfect for our walk to McGill University.  McGill was founded in 1821 and it's main campus is set at the foot of Mount Royal in downtown Montreal.  On our walk to the campus we came across a piano on the sidewalk our first of many we would come across while in Montreal.  Fanny was in heaven and proceeded to sit down and play a short song as people went about their day walking past.  I shot a short video and will attempt later to post it here when time allows.   Our tour of McGill was exciting for the girls especially when they learned that our tour guide who was about to begin her forth year was from Paris, France.   Both Brooke and Fanny were excited about the possibility of going to an english speaking school but being in a french speaking city like Montreal.  For the girls it would be the best of both worlds.

After the photo with our French tour guide we proceeded to walk up the 480 stairs to the top of Mount Royal for incredible view overlooking Montreal.   There we found another piano and were entertained yet again by Fanny.   Going down the stairs was certainly quicker than going up and although it was a hot and humid day the girls still had the energy to do some shopping.   Brooke purchased 2 t-shirts and Fanny some pants.

We told the girls that since they had their fun we wanted some fun and proceeded to find a nice cafe to enjoy a cold beer.   That night we headed back to old Montreal for a steak dinner at Vieux-Port Steakhouse.   The dinner was superb!! Brooke and Fanny went off exploring old Montreal on their own and we told them we would meet back at the hotel a short time later.   To our surprise the girls were back in the hotel room by the time we got back.   Rest up girls, tomorrow we drive to Quebec City.

Quebec City:
After our 3 hour drive we arrived at Montmorency Falls just before noon.   The falls we learned are 30 metres higher than Niagara Falls.   Me being afraid of heights I quickly handed the camera to Brooke and then I proceeded to almost run across the suspension bridge.

Quebec City is the capital of the province of Quebec and has a population of almost 600,000.  The name Quebec or Kebec is an Algonquin Indian word meaning "where the river narrow" and in this case the narrowing of the Saint Lawrence River.   Founded in 1608 by Samuel de Champlain, Quebec City is one of the oldest cities in North America.  The walls surrounding Old Quebec are the only fortified city walls north of Mexico.   We checked into our hotel and we all had a short 30 minute break before walking to Old Quebec.   Similar to Old Montreal but a much larger area, Old Quebec city was everything I thought it would be.  Old buildings, cobble stone streets and all lined with  small cafes and shops.

We went out for our last dinner at a great Italian restaurant down the road from our hotel after learning that Fanny loved pasta.  Seeing as it was too cold to sit out on the patio we went inside and were quickly asked if we wanted to be downstairs close to the live band or upstairs where it was nice and quiet.  Brooke without hesitation or without consulting with the rest of us chose the band option and we were seated so close we could almost touch them.    Dinner was excellent and the band just added to the evening.  We left full and ready for bed.

Thursday morning we awoke,  Lydia and I picked up McDonald's breakfast for the girls and shortly after we were in the car for our 11 hour journey home.  Throughout our 4 days away Brooke and Fanny really began to form a bond as did Lydia and I with Fanny.    The drive home the girls slept, sang to whichever song was on the radio (Sam Smith - Stay With Me), watched movies or Fanny helped Brooke with her French.
